Trail Description

Burr Oak Lake.
Richard Lutz

Supervisor: Open

60.2 Total Miles / 35.6 Off Road Miles (59.1%)
Map Publication Date: August 2014

The eastern portion starts at SR 78 northeast of Burr Oak Lake and goes into the Wayne National Forest. Eventually the trail follows the Burr Oak shoreline leaving the Burr Oak area to go through the Wayne National Forest. Public camp grounds are available at Burr Oak boat docks three and two (boat dock one is a picnic area only). The Wayne National Forest area trail is mostly off road until you reach the Logan, Ohio area then it follows country roads until the section ends at SR 664, four miles northwest of Logan Ohio. Rolling wooded hills with numerous streams to cross, and much beaver activity are in the Wayne National Forest area. Deer, turkey and other animals can be seen on this hike. During the summer months most of the streams are dry, so pack in your water supply. Shawnee, Ohio hosts the only restaurant and is near to the trail at Tecumsey Lake. Camping in the Wayne National Forest is permitted, but primitive no trace. A small store for minimal resupply is available in nearby New Straitsville or Murray City.

Map Updates

  • (11/14/16)Trail Change for New Straitsville

The official opening of the Buckeye Trail through Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve took place on Saturday, November 12, 2016. This action affects the trail in both the New Straitsville and the Old Mans Cave Section. For reference, the most recent map for the New Straitsville Section is the Edition of August 2014 and for the Old Mans Cave Section, October 2014. The new route through the Boch Hollow Preserve is shown on the accompanying map from ODNR.

From Point 33, the trail turns S on Bremen Road rather than NW and enters the Boch Hollow Preserve at the East Trailhead (Point L) for the Preserve. It then meanders generally WNW as shown and undulates over three ridges.

The trail exits the Preserve at the West Trailhead (Point A) on SR 644 and heads N. It rejoins the old route at the intersection of SR 664 and Zwickle Road.

The trail no longer reaches the intersection of Beach Camp Road and SR 664, Point 34 in the New Straitsville Section of Point 1 in the Old Mans Cave Section. The New Straitsville Section now ends at the West Trailhead on SR 664 where the Old Mans Cave Section now begins.

This route change increases the length of trail off road in the New Straitsville Section by about 4.2 miles and reduces the length of trail on road by about 2.1 miles. The new trail length is 60.2 miles (59.1% off road).

  • (4/28/15)Trail Change for New Straitsville

This Trail Change applies specifically to the edition of December 2012 although it may also be applied fairly easily to earlier editions. The change supplants a Trail Change dated 10/4/14. The change increases the length of the section from 56.2 mi to 57.8 mi. The altered route lies between Pt 3 and Pt 5 and between Pt 28 and Pt 34.

This Trail Change also applies to the edition of December 2013. In this case, the information included in Pt 3 through Pt 5 has already been included. The change increases the length of the section from 57.2 mi to 57.8 mi. The altered route lies between Pt 28 and Pt 34.

While the complete text from all points within any route change is shown below, only the top line from each point, under which the detailed text has not been changed, is shown. The current accumulative distances are always given. Those numbers are always followed by the point number.

Please note that the name of the road that the trail follows essentially N from SR 78 is now correctly identified as East Branch Church Rd. Earlier editions incorrectly used a different road name.

The trail continues into the Old Mans Cave Section Edition of October 2014. If your copy is older, please refer to the Trail Change dated 10/5/14 for material that may update your copy of the Old Mans Cave map.
