Volunteer Spotlight: John Smilek

October, 2025.

John Smilek, Miami Rivers Chapter

John Smilek is a dedicated Buckeye Trail Association Volunteer who serves as the Troy Section Supervisor in the Miami Rivers Chapter. He is a retired United States Airforce Navigator, and his section of trail travels right past the National Museum of the US Air Force. When hiking by, John can look over at the museum and see the exact NC-135 Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft that he flew while serving. Since retiring, John has worked diligently on creating the best hiking experience in his section of the Buckeye Trail. He has put a lot of time and effort into making improvements and reroutes that bring you safely by many other points of interest, including the Great Miami River and the Historic Ghost Town of Tadmor. John has also been a fantastic representative of the Buckeye Trail Association with hikers, scout groups, partners like Five Rivers MetroParks, and at events like the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience. Thanks for all that you do, John!
