Backpacking Trip - Pictured Rocks National LakeshoreBackpack the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan along Lake Superior, part of the North Country Trail. We will meet Sat. Sept. 11 at a Munisibg Tourist Park. On Sun. 9/12, we drive and park at the Munising Falls Information Center. A bus will shuttle us to the Grand Sable Visitor Center where we will start our hike. We hike 7.1 miles to Au Sable. On Mon. 9/13, we hike 7.3 miles to Seven Mile. On Tues. 9/14, we hike 8.8 miles to Coves group. Wed 9/15, the hike is 7.2 miles to Mosquito. Thurs 9/16, its 5.6 miles to the Cliffs, and Fri. 9/17, we hike 6.4 miles to Munising Falls. The total trip miles 42.4. We pick up the car(s) and drive to the Munising Tourist Park, clean up, and eat at a restaurant. We leave on Sat. 9/18 to head home. Total miles from my house in Mason to Munising 645 miles and will take 10 hrs and 9 minutes according to my gps. All cost on the road - gas, food, camping are at our cost. As always I try to get groups together so we can car pool to save money. There are two more out of pocket expenses for this trip. The shuttle bus charges 150.00 for 5 people the more people on the bus the less it will cost. The second expense is we have to have a 5.00 permit for each night we camp in the back country $5.00 X5 nights is $25.00 which has to picked up in person the day before the trip or the same day of the trip. No dogs are allowed in the back country. I have never 20 people on back pack trip, but I am only allowed 20 people in the group camp sites that I reserved. The first twenty to register will go. This trip could also be day hiked with a base camp which I have not looked into but if your are interested in this let me know. This whole trip will be on the North Country Trail with side trips to several water falls. From all information I have got there a few hills and some very sandy trails near the lake but the whole trip in general is not strenuous. One great website with a lot of useful info is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you want a water proof map they are available at the North Country Store 1-866-hike NCT , Map Mi-10. Phone Number for Munising Visitor center is 906-387-3700 and Grand Sable Visitor center is 906-494-2660. We will meet on Sat. Sept. 11 and Fri. Sept. 17 at the Munising Tourist Park, 2 miles west of Munising on the right side of the highway. The address is E8518 M28 West Au Train, MI 49806. Phone Number 906-387-3145. To reserve your spot send $10.00 for members and $30.00 for non members . To John Rethman, 1001 Seneca Dr., Mason Ohio 45040 or call 513-398-9527.
